Books have been an integral part of my day-to-day life ever since high school when I began to read with a passionate energy which has not lessened over the years.  Packing to go to college, I allotted the most important space to my small library, which took over a many-shelved makeshift structure on top of my dorm desk.

I grew up in a small town in Georgia named Roopville, close to Carrollton and the Alabama border, in a family that valued reading and other intellectual pursuits.  My family also valued the past, as we lived in a pre-Civil War house filled with collectables and relics picked up by my parents on numerous antiquing trips.

Smythe Books

Jim Strawn is the classic example of a person taking a passion – in his case a penchant for collecting books – and turning it into a business in retirement.  In October, 2006, Jim, then age 65 and a former finance chief in the radio industry, along with his wife, Judy, opened their own store, Smythe Books, in Dunwoody, Georgia.
